VISION 2020 IS A MOVING TARGET

Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr Lim Kok Wing, the Founder and President of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology

Seems like nobody wants to live in the present. All eyes are on the future with hearts and minds fixed on what it takes to be future-ready.

To me being future-ready begins with the imagination. You have to take your mind on a ride to visualize, for example, what the iPad of today will transform into in the future.

In country terms what does it mean to be future-ready? If we want to stretch the imagination we can think of a time when we run out of land or run out of oil and gas what will we rely on to generate wealth that will keep the money rolling in and everyone contented.

To be future-ready is to connect the dots and see the big picture

Elsewhere around the world there are people engaged in visualizing future scenarios using the present time as the basis to construct a future that is plausible. And in this scenario they throw in the four power tools of an innovation economy – nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technologies and networks and, lastly, neurotechnology.

A convergence of these technologies is taking place and the outcomes will transform the way we live our lives. More.

"The War of the Running Dogs" was the Communist insurgency in Malaya, which lasted from June 1948 to July 1960, first against the British protectorate and then, after August 1957, against the newly independent Federation of Malaya.

This book allows the reader to get a grasp of the emotions of the planters who stayed back and fought the Communist Terrorists for the love of this country.

In the first few years, the guerillas employed savage terrorist tactics against native Malays and Chinese as well as British planters, miners, and police, as they tried to bully and intimidate civilians into supporting them and resisting the British and the Malay sultans.

MALAYSIA'S DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE,

MALAYA BECAME INDEPENDENT
ON 31 AUGUST 1957

BRITISH COLONIALISM IN MALAYSIA

In the late 18th century the British East India Company traded with, and partly controlled India. At that time they began looking for a base in Malaysia.

In 1786 the British under Francis Light occupied Penang and founded Georgetown. In 1800 they took Province Wellesley.

In 1819 Sir Stamford Raffles founded a British trading post at Singapore.

By the treaty of London, 1824, the British and Dutch divided the region between them. The Dutch surrendered Melaka to the British. The Dutch were given control of Sumatra and all the area below the Malay Peninsula.

The British signed treaties of protection with Malay rulers from 1874 to 1930. In 1896 some of these states were grouped together as the Federated Malay States. Malaya was occupied by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945.

All the Malay states, together with the Straits Settlements except for Singapore, were incorporated into a new federation in 1948.

This was the basis on which Malaya achieved independence in 1957. In 1963 Malaya joined with Singapore (which seceded in 1965), North Borneo, and Sarawak to form Malaysia.

BABY AND CHILD CARE, PARENTING, WOMEN HEALTH, MANY OTHER CRUCIAL HEALTH ISSUES, AUTHORS DR. MIRIAM STOPPARD, DR. BENJAMIN MCLANE SPOCK,

 BABY AND CHILD CARE
“IT ISN'T ENOUGH TO BRING UP CHILDREN
HAPPY AND SECURE,
YOU NEED TO PROVIDE A DECENT WORLD FOR THEM”
QUOTE : BENJAMIN SPOCK, M.D

Many women now realize that choosing a good doctor for your baby is something important that should be done well before a baby is born to prevent any hiccups in baby's care after the birth. This person is going to be someone that you will be seeing quite frequently for baby care and in cases of illness and emergency.

All my kids are under the care of one Dr Lee from Subang Medical Centre, Subang Jaya, Malaysia and I have been so grateful to him, like forever. Both husband and wife are paediatricians and the wife operates her own clinic in Seksyen SS2, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

What I love most about Dr Lee - he would close his clinic for a few months, to personally to take care of his own newborn babies. Awesome? And the way he handles kids - simply magical! That inspired my husband to put into practice same; lured him to take two months paternity leave to help care for our newborn babies!

So what happens when you live far away from your mother, or from your kid’s paediatrician? We did not have internet facilities back then and were living in very remote secondary jungle areas of Borneo, Malaysia.

Just as I started learning how to cook using cookbooks, I started my early A to Z parenting years clinging to “Parenting and Child Care Books”! These are two of my favourite authors;

His ideas about childcare influenced several generations of parents to be more flexible and affectionate with their children, and to treat them as individuals, telling parents: “Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.”

Dr. Benjamin Spock (1903-1998) first began learning about children as he grew up, helping take care of his five younger siblings. Spock earned his medical degree at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1924 and focused on paediatrics.

Dr. Spock was the first paediatrician to study psychoanalysis . Dr. Spock thought he could help children even more if he understood psychology so he spent six years studying at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute.

During his long and distinguished professional career, Dr. Spock taught at several of the nation's leading institutions of higher learning, including Cornell University, the University of Minnesota, and Case Western Reserve University. His lifelong interest in, and love for, people made him develop into an astute observer of the human condition.

His interest in this field motivated him to author a dozen books and hundreds of articles on child care and the major social problems of our age. He was active in helping humanity in numerous organizations until he died in March of 1998, a few weeks before his 95th birthday.

The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care (often referred to simply as Baby and Child Care), written by Benjamin Spock, was first published on 14 July 1946 by Duell, Sloan and Pearce; it is one of the biggest best-sellers of all time. Dr. Spock is arguably the most influential paediatrician and child development thinker of the 20th century.

His writings and ideas have influenced so many millions of mothers that he has been called affectionately the nation's "baby doctor". His influence in the world has been so profound that Dr. Spock was named one of the hundred most important people in the twentieth century by Life magazine. He also is widely considered the most influential child care authority of the twentieth century (Britannica Year in Review, 1998).

By 1998, it had sold more than 50 million copies, and it has been translated into 42 languages. Another source places the book as the seventh best-selling book of all time.

PROPERTY BILLIONAIRE, WU YAJUN 47, ONE OF WEALTHIEST SELF MADE WOMAN BILLIONAIRE, FORMER FACTORY WORKER, JOURNALIST, NET WORTH ESTIMATED AT $5.5 BILLION

THE PROPERTY BILLIONAIRE WHO SHUNS PUBLICITY CHINA DAILY

Wu Yajun
Nationality: Chinese   Age: 47
Company: Longfor Properties - China
Sector: Property

With respect to more prominent female entrepreneurs like Estée Lauder and Martha Stewart, even when compared to Oprah,  Wu Yajun's net worth towers over most. Wu Yajun is one of the wealthiest self-made women in the world, with a fortune last estimated by Forbes at Net worth of $5.5 billion.

However, due to a lack of public information about her, Wu's full name was incorrectly spelt so most people think she is a man.

A former journalist, Wu Yajun graduated from the Department of Navigation Engineering of the Northwestern Polytechnical University in 1984. From 1988 to 1993 worked as a journalist and editor with the China Sirong News Agency.

She has built a substantial property portfolio from her roots in Chongqing across China's rapidly developing cities, including Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Wuxi, Changzhou and Dalian.

Wu is not only well known for her wealth but also for her low-key business approach. She has adopted the "Three Nos" principle from the very start - no appearances on television, no interviews and no autographs. When asked why she kept such a low profile, Wu just smiled and said: "Well, I have nothing to talk about. I am just a person focusing on my own business."

Rupert Hoogewerf, founder and compiler of the Hurun rich list partly attributed the Chinese women’s business success to the government’s one-child policy and free childcare provided by many grandparents, which has enabled them to spend time building their empires.

China’s long acceptance of women working outside the home has been another significant factor. The booming Chinese economy has also been a big factor, creating more opportunities, giving them access to a huge consumer population and also cheap labour.

Now how did these women become famous entrepreneurs? What traits or characters do they possess that the average female entrepreneurs lack? What’s the secret to their business success?

10 Characteristics of Successful Business Women (Entrepreneurs)

4.            They are humble and willing to learn
5.            Ability to handle criticism

HANDY KITCHEN GADGETS, SELF STIRRING ELECTRIC POT, MEAT AND FISH FLOSS

HANDY KITCHEN GADGETS
SELF STIRING ELECTRIC POT

The festive season is just around the corner, phones, facebook chats and messages busy trickling in; enquiring, discussing and the booking of plane, train or bus tickets. What is really special for us this year, a double celebration –‘Hari Raya Aidilfitri’ (is the Malay term for Eid ul-Fitr) and 'Merdeka' (means Independence in Malay! It’s the Independent Day of Malaya on 31st August 1957).

My daughter is already requesting for her favourite “Daging Serunding” (beef floss)- the ones usually sold during this festive season is either too bland, flat and too dry. Oh dear, the hours spent having to stir it dry.

I was living in Sabah for many years where the cost of fish was very cheap and fresh from sea (Mackerel, tuna, sardines, kembung, bawal etc prices bet RM3-RM5 per kg only) I made fish floss very often. Hmmm.. Delicious however I hated having to spend hours to stir, I once decided to try the shortest methods, using the microwave - no it did not work out well.

I was fantasizing to myself, "if only there exist a self stirring pot", and walla.. look what I found! Isn’t life wonderful? I am so excited about this and hope that I can somehow find one in our market ASAP, I am sure it will be of great help for us women, cooking in the kitchen?

This is the electric cooker that automatically stirs ingredients, leaving you free to prepare other parts of the meal. A spatula integrated into the bottom of the pot rotates autonomously as food cooks, mixing ingredients and lifting bits of food that would otherwise stick and burn.

The spatula can be set to stir continuously--ideal for stir frying--or intermittently to ensure a simmering soup's ingredients are well incorporated.

The electric pot adjusts from 200º F to 400º F, allowing cooks to sauté, sear, braise, boil, or simmer, and the tempered glass lid helps retain moisture during cooking.

The 3 1/4-quart pot is made from cast aluminum that distributes heat evenly and the interior has a non-stick surface. Pot, spatula, and lid are dishwasher safe. Plugs into AC. 13" W x 9" D x 10 1/2" H. (8 3/4 lbs.)

FOOD, GLORIOUS MALAYSIAN FOOD, A COMPLETE MALAYSIAN COOKBOOK, MALAYSIAN'S CULINARY HERITAGE, CHINESE AND WESTERN COOKIES, TIPS

  MALAYSIAN'S CULINARY HERITAGE
my favourite
COMPLETE MALAYSIAN COOKBOOK
MY FIRST COOKBOOK

My mother was a good cook and cooking was her passion. However she did not allow her children into the kitchen, so I never had the opportunity to learn cooking from her. Moreover, from the very young age of 12 years I was living away from home for my studies - those days girls will automatically be placed in hostels and here too, we were not allowed into the kitchens! Goodness!

When I started work I was living on my own. My apartment was right in the city where we can get all varieties of food, available 24hours a day. So cooking was never my priority - until I got married I never knew how to cook.

I tested many cookbooks and over the years became attached to those written by veteran chef Betty Saw, one of Malaysia's favourite food writers and the author of the immensely popular newspaper food column, 'From Betty Saw's Kitchen'.

The Complete Malaysian Cookbook (formerly Rasa Malaysia) takes you on a voyage through Malaysia's culinary heritage where every state's best recipes are showcased. From Johor Laksa to Penang Acar, these books contain kitchen-tested recipes sourced from home kitchens to the royal kitchens.

Cookies Galore contains over 70 recipes for mouth-watering cookies. The veteran culinary expert gives her take on the old staples of shortbread, chocolate chip cookies, etc., with recipes for Double Chocolate Shortbread, Raisin and Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies and other original sweet and savoury cookies.

The book contains recipes for both Chinese and Western cookies. Vegetarians should find the book useful, since Betty includes several eggless cookies, such as Eggless Almond Butter Cookies and Eggless Double Ginger Cookies.

In this second compilation, Betty Saw lets you in on more of her great cooking tips and ideas. With answers to questions like how to best prepare asparagus and the correct way to choose a lobster, this book will be a boon to both the experienced cook and to one just starting out in the kitchen.

This is the third book full of helpful cooking tips and ideas collected from years of first-hand experience, Betty Saw presents them in answers to questions like how to prevent avocado from turning brown and how to make kuih keria with grated tapioca instead of sweet potato. Arranged from A to Z in terms of subject, this book will be a handy companion to all cooks, whether experienced cooks or aspiring beginners.

Many More Kitchen Secrets is the fourth book in the series. Betty Saw helps you find your way around the kitchen from how to pull egg strips when making agar-agar to how to make yoghurt that is not too liquid.

With over 30 years of experience, she shares her knowledge and practical cooking tips on various television cooking programmes and in several cookbooks, including Betty Saw's Best Noodles Recipes, Everything Bean Curd! The Best of Chinese Cooking, Asian Fish Cookbook, Asian Retro Food, Tempt, Asian Delights, A Time for Dessert, Cookies and Slices and many more.
