Nationality: Chinese   Age: 47
Company: Longfor Properties - China
Sector: Property

With respect to more prominent female entrepreneurs like Estée Lauder and Martha Stewart, even when compared to Oprah,  Wu Yajun's net worth towers over most. Wu Yajun is one of the wealthiest self-made women in the world, with a fortune last estimated by Forbes at Net worth of $5.5 billion.

However, due to a lack of public information about her, Wu's full name was incorrectly spelt so most people think she is a man.

A former journalist, Wu Yajun graduated from the Department of Navigation Engineering of the Northwestern Polytechnical University in 1984. From 1988 to 1993 worked as a journalist and editor with the China Sirong News Agency.

She has built a substantial property portfolio from her roots in Chongqing across China's rapidly developing cities, including Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Wuxi, Changzhou and Dalian.

Wu is not only well known for her wealth but also for her low-key business approach. She has adopted the "Three Nos" principle from the very start - no appearances on television, no interviews and no autographs. When asked why she kept such a low profile, Wu just smiled and said: "Well, I have nothing to talk about. I am just a person focusing on my own business."

Rupert Hoogewerf, founder and compiler of the Hurun rich list partly attributed the Chinese women’s business success to the government’s one-child policy and free childcare provided by many grandparents, which has enabled them to spend time building their empires.

China’s long acceptance of women working outside the home has been another significant factor. The booming Chinese economy has also been a big factor, creating more opportunities, giving them access to a huge consumer population and also cheap labour.

Now how did these women become famous entrepreneurs? What traits or characters do they possess that the average female entrepreneurs lack? What’s the secret to their business success?

  2. hi katrina,
wow, she is only 47.. ha ha. It's funny how free child care from grandparents and a "one child" government policy can contribute to a woman's success..in business.
But i can understand, the booming economy as a great contributing factor, providing lots of business opportunities. Even our country import a lot of their stuff- i like cotton their fabrics.
Their products are very much in demand due to lower currency rate- a real plus for economic boom in china.
i think it's the first few steps in the first few years of business is the toughest period.
once they strike , it's a fairly easy to hit bulls eye...at every future business deals, because the fundamentals are already strong.
